Official FIRST Game Manual (opens in new window)
Breakaway is a game played using an actual soccer ball. The arena is split into 3 zones, separated by a foot high speed bump. 1 robot from each alliance is placed in each zone. Robots can pass between the zones by going over the speed bumps or through a passageway underneath the tower. The main objective is to get the soccer balls into your goals which are on the same side of the field as your alliance's station. The soccer balls can be put back into play by passing them to the person in charge of the trident on your alliance. The balls are then placed the rail which deposits them onto the field.
The game begins with a 15 second autonomous period where the robots drive themselves. Robots can use the target above the goal to aim and shoot the balls in. Then the match moves into the tele-operated period where humans drive the robots. Near the end of the match robots can earn bonus points by climbing onto the tower platform or hanging from its frame. More bonus can be earned if a robot hangs off another robot from their alliance that is also hanging from the frame of the tower.
