About FIRST
FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is a not-for-profit foundation that has committed itself to getting young people interested and involved in scientific, technical, and math fields. Founded in 1989 by the inventor of the Segway, Dean Kamen, FIRST has grown to 90,000 volunteers and 248,000 young people from every state in the United States and 55 countries around the world.
When we think of math and science, "fun" is not probably the first word that comes to mind. At FIRST, math and science are turned into a team-based competition that is fun and challenging; a "sport for the mind." Unlike many traditional sports, everybody gets a chance to participate, no matter what their abilities. At the competitions, it is very commonplace to see teams helping out other teams and lending parts/tools even though they might be competing against each other in the next couple matches.
Over the years, FIRST has grown into multiple programs as they add
opportunities for a broader age groups. You can click on the different groups
